An invitation to join the John Hansard Gallery team for Southampton Celebrates

You are invited to join the John Hansard Gallery (JHG) team as they celebrate moving into their new home in Studio 144, Guildhall Square, on Friday 16 February, from 18:00 – 21:00.

The building on the left is occupied by Nuffield Southampton Theatres; building on the right is the new home for JHG and City Eye.

From 16 to 24 February you can also enjoy Sampler, a week-long mix of art, music, film, performance and words, which offers a flavour of what is to come when the Gallery formally reopens later this year. There will be something for everyone, including a wide range of emerging and established artists, organisations and partners from across Southampton and the region. More information can be found here.

Sampler is part of Southampton Celebrates, the moment John Hansard Gallery, City Eye and Nuffield Southampton Theatres come together to celebrate moving into Studio 144, Southampton’s new arts complex. Studio 144 is the final piece of the city’s Cultural Quarter and expected to attract 350,000 people to the city centre each year.

Friday 16 February will see the joint launch of both buildings at Studio 144, with a large-scale outdoor dance commission, choreographed by Zoielogic Dance Theatre, and culminating in a fireworks display just before 19:00 to announce the arrival of John Hansard Gallery, City Eye and Nuffield Southampton Theatres at the new venue.

Sampler will continue until 24 February, with daily events, screenings and workshops (except Sunday 18 February). After Sampler, John Hansard Gallery will formally reopen on 12 May 2018 with a retrospective by renowned German painter Gerhard Richter in association with ARTIST ROOMS.

Woodrow Kernohan, Director of John Hansard Gallery, comments:

“We are delighted to announce our move into our extraordinary new city-centre home in Guildhall Square. This will be a sea change for John Hansard Gallery, tripling our size and enabling us to realise our public-facing, community engagement and artist-focused ambitions.”
