The University’s Carbon Management Fund supports initiatives that help to manage our impact on the environment.
Since 2013, more than £2m has been invested in projects to reduce energy usage and carbon emissions on our campuses.
The latest investment will see changes to the way our energy-intensive server rooms are kept cool.
Server rooms tend to be in the centre of buildings and air conditioning units are normally used to maintain a stable temperature 365 days of year.
Now the University is investing in a system of ducts and fans to draw cooler air in from outside and draw warm air out of the rooms.
The simple but innovative change will reduce energy usage and save money. It will also be cheaper and easier to maintain the fans compared to the old air conditioning units.
The change has already been introduced in buildings 37, 25 and 28 and will be included in future new developments on our campuses. There will be no disruption to students or staff.
Any student or member of staff can submit ideas to the Carbon Management Fund. To find out more, email [email protected] or visit southampton.likn.co/sustainability. Some examples of other Carbon Management Fund projects can be found here.
