There are only two weeks to go until the Festival of Doctoral Research kicks off with the popular Bake your PhD competition!
The Festival’s varied programme celebrates and brings together our doctoral research community.
Alongside many activities for doctoral researchers, a number of events are open to the wider student and staff community and in some cases to members of the public. See our full programme for more details.
Book your place using the event-specific links below:
- 11 May 2018: Artificial Intelligence: interdisciplinary sessions (open to all)
A two-part event where a) staff and students with an interest in machine learning can find out more about the cutting-edge work of research groups in this area, and b) doctoral researchers from any discipline can join an interactive workshop to explore how Artificial Intelligence methods and techniques might be applied to their own data sets.
- 14 May 2018: Guest speaker Dr Andy Cope: ‘Confessions of a recovering academic’ (open to all)
Andy spent the last 12 years researching the science of positivity. However, in a twist of irony, his PhD in happiness actually made him unhappy. Listen to Dr Cope’s tale of triumph over adversity, during which he’ll not only share good research practise, but also information about happiness, resilience, wellbeing and positive psychology.
- 15 May 2018: Emoji Thesis
Returning for its second year, doctoral researchers will explore their thesis without discipline-specific language/words – using digital and sticker emojis.
- 16 May 2018: Doctoral Research Showcase
There’s still time for Doctoral Researchers to enter – either individually or as group with a poster, exhibit or hands-on activity. On the day, the Showcase will be open to all – come and meet our researchers and find out more about their work.
- 17 May 2018: Three Minute Thesis Grand Final (open to all)
Eight Doctoral Researchers (one per faculty) compete to become the Three Minute Thesis University champion.
