Centre for Cancer Immunology construction completion celebration

The University is celebrating the completion of a very successful building project for the Centre for Cancer Immunology.

The event, on Wednesday 25 April, celebrated the end of the building process and thanked everyone who was involved.

The University Estates & Facilities team have led an exceptionally successful project, resulting in a world-class facility, based on an innovative design and a vision to attract and retain global talent, maximising the opportunity for research collaboration nationally and internationally.

The building is a milestone for the University, and we are proud to have the first centre in the United Kingdom which is 100 per cent dedicated to cancer immunology research. The new state-of-the-art Centre will allow the University to accelerate its research progress and will enable us to double the number of patient clinical trials, so more lives are saved.

The Centre for Cancer Immunology is also the first ever University building which is 100 per cent funded through philanthropy, due in part to the overwhelming support and fundraising by students and staff, as well as the wider community.

In his speech, President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Christopher Snowden acknowledged the successful partnerships which have been fostered through the building process.

The University is proud of our relationship with the University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, which is a collaboration that drives medical advancements through its bench to bedside approach.

David French, of the University Hospital Southampton, commented:

“It is a great advantage to have this kind of facility right next door to the hospital. This research will ultimately affect people around the world and it also has a very real impact on us locally in Southampton and the surrounding regions.”

The Vice-Chancellor also thanked construction company Kier who were so inspired by the project that that some of the team helped to raise funds for the Centre by cycling the South Downs cycle path, raising over £11,000, joined by Malcolm Wright from Estates and Facilities.

The event also acknowledged our valued partnerships with Southampton City Council, and our research funders such as Cancer Research UK and the Medical Research Council.

After the event, we spoke to the Vice-Chancellor directly:
