The third entry in our four-part series focuses on paraphrasing.
You’ve probably heard about the importance of paraphrasing in academic writing, but while expressing someone else’s statement or idea in your own words might sound easy, it can be a difficult skill to master.
When paraphrasing, try to avoid working directly from the original text. When you have a good understanding of what you’re trying to paraphrase, put the text to one side and try to summarise the passage in three or four bullet points. Once you’ve done this, you can think more carefully about the wording and structure of your paraphrase without being tempted to copy the original.
You can read more about paraphrasing here.
