Edinburgh Fringe preview of ‘Fibre optics can save the world’

The magical internet-providing properties of fibre optics are well-known. But hardly anyone has heard of fibre optics that can diagnosis cancer or detect gravity waves, and Dr Matthew Partridge, of the EPSRC-funded Airguide Photonics programme at the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC), is using comedy to change that.

If you are curious about photonics, Matthew invites you to preview his Edinburgh Fringe comedy performance of Fibre optics can save the world in celebration of UNESCO’s International Day of Light on Wednesday 16 May from 16:00 in Building 53/4025 seminar room.

Drinks, pizza and goody bags follow the free hour-long show.

In their review of the show, Physics World commented:

“The show is educational, packed full of fascinating insight into the invention and uses of fibre optics.

These wonderful, cutting-edge fibre optics sensors can do amazing things and fix almost any problem. If you don’t believe something so tiny can save the world, come and challenge Matthew with any predicament and he’ll tell you how fibre optic sensors can fix it!
