Exceptional number of Marie Curie Fellowships for Southampton

We’ve secured a record seven Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowships, the most in one call the programme has ever had. These European Fellowships enable researchers from across the world to come to Southampton and undertake research supported by our academics.

All the Fellowships will last for two years and have a combined value of over €1.3m.

The seven fellows will be arriving from countries including Romania, Singapore, China and the USA. Their research delves into areas such as digital humanities, polar dust structures, DNA and low-impact concrete structures.

Academics in the Faculties of: Engineering and Environment, Humanities, Physical Sciences and Engineering, and Natural and Environmental Sciences will be supervising and managing all the projects.

Dr Mithila Achintha, lecturer in Structural Engineering, is the Principal Investigator and Supervisor for Fellow Dr Wei Sun from China. Dr Achintha is very much looking forward to welcoming his new fellow and commented:

“Recent research investigations show over 50 per cent embodied energy wastages in typical reinforced concrete buildings. In this project, we use innovative structural materials and systems in design and construction that put embodied energy at the centre of the design process and thereby creates a new model for delivering low-impact concrete structures.”

The call for 2018 individual Fellowships has just opened and is taking applications until September this year. You can find more information here.
