New John Hansard Gallery opens in Guildhall Square this weekend

The University’s John Hansard Gallery opens its doors to the public at its magnificent new home in Southampton’s Cultural Quarter on Saturday 12 May at 11:00. Everyone is invited!

John Hansard Gallery is a much-loved part of the University, and has been an important cultural destination at Highfield Campus for nearly 40 years. This Saturday sees the start of a new phase in the Gallery’s history as it completes its move to the heart of the city, close to the University’s offices in Guildhall Square and the Mayflower Halls of residence.

The John Hansard Gallery

Here, at its Studio 144 location, it will bring world-class contemporary art to new audiences, as well as its longstanding campus visitors: with the unilink bus maintaining its connection to Highfield.

Arts and culture are highly valued and encouraged at the University – in both our education programmes and our recreational activities for students, staff and the community. Whether on campus or in the city centre, the arts offer inspiring ways to bring us together.

John Hansard Gallery’s first major exhibition at its new home showcases the work of Gerhard Richter, one of the world’s leading contemporary artists. All the galleries are devoted to Richter’s works, in a unique presentation for Southampton, drawn from the ARTIST ROOMS collection, Tate and the artist’s studio. The exhibition explores different areas of the artist’s practice, including painting, photography, print and tapestry.

A free programme of events for all ages accompanies the exhibition, including lunchtime talks, drop-in family activity, music events with Southampton’s professional orchestra SÓN and a half-term Film School for children and young people run by the Gallery’s neighbour City Eye.

ARTISTS ROOMS: Gerhard Richter runs from 12 May to 18 August 2018.

Admission is free. For details of opening times and upcoming events, visit the John Hansard Gallery website. If you’re planning on seeing the exhibition on Saturday 12 May 2018, let us know on the Facebook event.
