Working or studying late? Top tips to travel safely

As we are all well into semester two, it is a busy time for our students and staff and you may find yourself studying or working late from time to time.

Below, you will find some general advice that we would recommend keeping in mind when travelling around the city and our campuses.

Whether you’re around campus or the city in the day or in the evening, make sure to keep your laptops and other valuables with you at all times.

If you have found yourself studying late in the Hartley Library or working late in the office, remember that the Students’ Union safety bus is available to you, and for a reasonable price.

The safety bus, which is available to students and staff, costs £1.50 per journey as long as you live within three miles of campus. If you live less than five miles from campus, the bus will take you to your door for £3.00 and if you live in Winchester, it will cost just £4.50.

If you find yourself in a situation with no cash but you need to get home, you can still use the safety bus. The driver will take your student or staff I.D card and then you will be asked to bring the correct change to the Students’ Union Reception the next day, where you can then collect your I.D card. Find out more about the Safety Bus, including operating hours on the Students’ Union website.

Alternatively, Radio Taxi have a mobile phone app, which allows you to request a taxi and pay with credit or debit card, should you find you have no cash on you.

If you are on campus late, make sure your phone stays charged as it’s easy for phone batteries to run low without you realising. Keep in mind that the Hartley Library on Highfield Campus is currently open 24 hours and has charging points available to students and staff based in the quiet study areas.
