A multi-disciplinary team lead by Dr James Dyke and Dr Alan Wong from the University brought TEDx talks to Nuffield Southampton’s City Theatre (NST City) on Saturday 5 May, on the theme of collective ‘growth’.
Details of the speakers, exhibitors, photographs, as well as the talk videos from the day will be available here soon: www.tedxsouthampton.co.uk
There are several other high-profile events that the University is running or championing in Guildhall Square over the coming months, such as:
- Collaborative productions at NST City
- Leading art exhibitions at the John Hansard Gallery
- Let’s Ride Southampton on 17 June 2018 with free live music, art and science activities
Students and staff are welcome at all these events.
Our TEDxSouthampton event was delivered to a packed audience of over 400 people in the heart of the city. The talks featured 11 thought-provoking speakers and performers, with topics ranging from the history and memory of Southampton, to choosing sustainability versus growth.
This year’s event also featured several University exhibitors, including the Public Engagement Roadshow in Bringing Research to Life, Erica the Rhino from ECS, and the student Human Powered Submarine project, which managed to raise hundreds of pounds towards their competition’s cause as part of the event.
James, Associate Professor of Sustainability Science and overall producer, reflects:
“What started with 90 people in a lecture theatre in Highfield Campus five years ago, has now become a major event.
“This shows the growing appetite in the city for such engaging cultural events, which brings together the tremendously talent and diverse range of speakers.”
