Rachel Owen, doctoral researcher from the Faculty of Natural and Environmental Sciences, has won the top award at this year’s Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) University Grand Final.

Rachel competed against doctoral researchers from our University’s seven other faculties. Rachel will now go on to represent our University at the 3MT national semi-finals later this year.

This annual competition, developed by the University of Queensland and now an international initiative, requires doctoral researchers to explain their research project to a non-specialist audience in just three minutes, accompanied by just one static slide.

Commenting on her win, Rachel Owen said:

“Being a part of the University 3MT Grand Final was an incredible experience, and one that I will surely never forget!

“It was a unique opportunity to experience the incredible breadth of exciting research being undertaken by our postgraduate researchers, in a way that was accessible for everyone. All of the finalists gave fantastic talks, and it is truly an honour to win such a hard fought competition. I hope to do the University and my faculty proud in the national round of 3MT.”

Winning the Runner Up prize from the Judging Panel was Alan Sanderson from the Faculty of Engineering and the Environment, with Stephen Lim from the Faculty of Medicine taking the People’s Choice award in a very close vote.

The 3MT prize money will be used by this year’s winners to support their research.

Congratulations to all who took part and we wish Rachel the best of luck in the next stage of the competition!
