Where can I study? #ExamZen2018

Exam and deadline season can be stressful, but finding somewhere to study doesn’t have to be.

To make life a little easier, in collaboration with the Students’ Union and the Library team, we’ve compiled a list of places where you can study.

Bank Holiday Monday 28 May

Please be aware that all our University library sites, apart from the Winchester School of Art Library, will be open this Bank Holiday Monday 28 May with some reduction in hours. You can view opening hours across all our sites here.

University resources:

University Library sites:

  • You can book a study desk for up to four hours each day within the Hartley Library. You can also book group study rooms in Hartley using this system, as well as group study rooms at Avenue Campus.
  • There are additional study desks available on Level 4 of the Hartley Library until 8 June.
  • The Hartley Library has opened additional study rooms during the exam period. See the Library’s website for details of where they are.

Students’ Union:

  • You can study on the soft seating (sofas and armchairs) and booths in The Bridge (Building 42, Highfield) during opening times. Find out more over on the Students’ Union blog.
  • You can use the Students’ Union room booking system to secure your favourite spot.
  • The Union’s Meeting Rooms 2, 6 and 7 will be available as study spaces until 8 June.

Safety

Got some late nights coming up? Information on the Union’s Safety Bus service can be found here.

Alternatives

Changing up the locations you revise in could be beneficial, especially if you’re the type of person who finds that revising at home leaves you eyeing up opportunities for procrastination, or if spending extended hours in the library makes you long for some time outside.

Knowing the conditions you need in order to concentrate is essential; if you find noise and conversation distracting, coffee shops should be avoided but green spaces such as parks could be an option. If the weather is good, why not take your revision outside with friends in the daytime? Discover Southampton has a list of parks and open spaces within the city. If lovely views inspire you, the café at NOCS (closed on weekends) overlooks the water and offers student discounts on food.

Managing your time

Learning to manage your time is an important skill for any student.

Set yourself a specific time or number of hours for revision, and stick to it (yes, we mean stepping away from social media!). By studying for defined portions of the day without interruption, you’ll value and enjoy your free time more, without the sense that time is slipping away from you in the run up to particular exams or deadlines.
