Graduate employability remains of strategic importance to the higher education sector with continued and growing, interest in graduate career outcomes among students, parents, employers, the government and the universities themselves.

It’s now recognised that employability goes beyond developing discipline-specific and non-technical skills, but also involves career management competencies, professional identity, practical experience and the individual’s confidence in their own capabilities.

Student success is often measured by job attainment soon after graduation, a narrow measure that does not reflect contemporary working and broader notions of career success.

This seminar will draw on Denise’s recent research exploring the evolving concept of graduate employability, discussing pathways for development with a particular focus on work-integrated learning (WIL).

It will review the problem of interchanging the terms employability and employment and will consider other approaches for gauging student success.
