Doctoral Researcher set to represent Southampton in Three Minute Thesis National Finals

Well done to doctoral researcher Rachel Owen for making it through to the Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) National Competition Final, taking place on Monday 17 September 2018 in Birmingham.

Representing the University, Rachel will take to the stage in front of hundreds to present her thesis, with just one slide, in only three minutes.

Now in the final stages of her candidature within the Faculty of Environmental and Life Sciences, Rachel was pitched against more than 50 doctoral researchers from across the UK to win her place at the UK Final. She was chosen as one of six finalists who will compete for the 3MT National Champion title at the Vitae Researcher Development International Conference next month.

Rachel commented on her achievement:

“Taking part in the 3 Minute Thesis competition has been a wonderful experience, and one which has greatly improved my science communication skills at a crucial point of my studies. I am incredibly excited to represent the University in the National Grand Final.”

Rachel is well-versed in the 3MT® competition format after winning both her Faculty heat and then the University Grand Final earlier this year during the Doctoral College Festival of Doctoral Research. With her presentation on ‘Unravelling the origins of DFT2, a newly emerged contagious cancer threatening the Tasmanian devil with extinction’, Rachel wowed the judging panel to take the University’s first place award.

Hannah Siddle, Rachel’s supervisor, said:

“The Three Minute Thesis is a real challenge and pushes our doctoral students to communicate their research in a way that is clear, accessible and interesting to a broad audience. Rachel has excelled at this and we are very proud and excited that she has made the UK final.”

First developed by the University of Queensland, the Three Minute Thesis Competition is now a global initiative with more than 350 universities taking part.
