Staff and students are invited to our inaugural Race Equality Charter debate event entitled: Our curriculum: is it diverse?
Taking place on Thursday 18 October from 17:30 – 20:00 in the Cube (Students’ Union Building 42), this free-to-attend debate forms part of our Black History Month celebrations and will explore diversity in the curriculum, with a focus on race equality.
Attendees will have an opportunity to hear from a panel of speakers who will discuss the pros and cons of various methods of institutional decolonization in a question time format. The panel will include external guest speakers, university academics and student representatives. Suggestions made at the event will be fed into future project initiatives and the University’s Equality Charters.
The event will close with a drinks reception offering an opportunity for networking.
“This inaugural Race Equality Charter event allows us to debate the key measures and mechanisms to underpin the wider goal of Race Equality within the Higher Education sector,” said Professor Bashir Al-Hashimi, Dean of Physical Sciences and Engineering and Chair of the University Race Equality Chair Committee.
“It encourages student and staff participation from across the University to contribute to this important discussion.”
Dr Pathik Pathak, Chair of the SHINE Black Asian and Minority Staff Network commented:
“This discussion on the diversity of our curriculum is hugely welcome. I’m hoping it will provide a catalyst to internationalise our programmes so that they challenge forms of bias, better reflect the world at large, and create an inclusive space for learning.”
Emily Harrison, Students’ Union Vice President Student Communities, said:
“At the Students’ Union, we put student input at the heart of everything that we do. That is why I am so pleased to be working with University on this event, as it will provide an important opportunity for students to have their say on the curriculum, which they are being taught. The hope is that the feedback from this event will directly impact the University’s education programme going forward.”
The University signed the Race Equality Charter in February 2018 as a public commitment to improve the representation, progression and success of minority ethnic staff and students within higher education. More information can be found here.
This event is brought to you in partnership between the Shine BAME Staff Network, Students’ Union and the Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Team.
