University choir performance to celebrate the story of Fisk Jubilee Singers

Join The University of Southampton Voices choir on Friday 30 November at the Turner Sims concert hall for a performance dedicated to telling the incredible story of the Fisk Jubilee Singers.

Tickets for the performance are available here.

Fisk Jubilee Singers

The Fisk Jubilee choir introduced ‘slave songs’ to the world in 1871 and were instrumental in preserving this unique American musical tradition.  They broke racial barriers in the US and abroad in the late 19th century and entertained Kings and Queens in Europe, including our very own Queen Victoria. At the same time, they raised money in support of their beloved Fisk University in Nashville. The University was set up within six months of the end of the American civil war, with a dream of an educational institution that would be open to all, regardless of race.

The music is taken from the back catalogue of the Fisk Jubilee choir and has been arranged by Harvey Brough, choirmaster, Turner Sims Professor of Music, and a professional musician.

Don’t miss this opportunity to hear the fascinating story of the Fisk Jubilee choir, with performances of classics such as ‘Go Down Moses’ and ‘Swing Low, Sweet Chariot’.
