Top tips for safe travel

As the festive season is upon us, it can be a busy time for our students and staff and you may find yourself on campus or in the city in the evening.

We’ve put together some general advice to keep in mind when travelling around the city and our campuses.

If you’ve found yourself studying late in the Hartley Library or working late in the office, remember that the Students’ Union safety bus is available to you, and for a reasonable price.

Starting at just £1.50, the safety bus is available from 21:00 in term time outside Building 42 on Highfield Campus.

If you find yourself in a situation with no cash but you need to get home, you can still use the safety bus. The driver will take your student or staff I.D card and then you will be asked to bring the correct change to the Students’ Union Reception the next day, where you can then collect your I.D card. Find out more about the Safety Bus, including operating hours on the Students’ Union website.

Don’t forget that Unilink provide regular bus services between campuses and halls up until just before 01:00, with a night bus service from the city centre between 01:0003:00. Our students and staff benefit from discounted season tickets on Unilink services, and tickets can also be used on Bluestar services in the city. The free Winchester School of Art shuttle bus is also available, and runs until just after 22:00 from Highfield Campus to Erasmus Park via Winchester.

Alternatively, Radio Taxis has a mobile phone app, which allows you to request a taxi and pay with credit or debit card, for times when you don’t have any cash.

Whether you’re around campus or the city during the day or in the evening, make sure to keep your laptops and other valuables with you at all times.

If you are on campus late, make sure your phone stays charged as it’s easy for phone batteries to run low without you realising. Keep in mind that the Hartley Library on Highfield Campus is currently open until midnight and has charging points available to students and staff based in the quiet study areas.
