University celebrates more awards for gender equality

Our University’s School of Economic, Social and Political Sciences and School of Health Sciences are celebrating Bronze Athena SWAN Awards.

Yesterday (Monday 10 December 2018), representatives from the latest award winners in Economic, Social and Political Sciences and Health Sciences attended a national ceremony that was held on Highfield Campus.

The achievement recognises that both have demonstrated good practice and comprehensive planning towards the advancement of gender equality: representation, progression and success for all. They add to a rising tally of Athena SWAN awards presented to faculties, schools and academic units over the last few years.

President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Christopher Snowden, has said in relation to this achievement:

“I’m delighted to see even more areas of our University securing Athena SWAN status, building on the foundation of our previous awards. This continued success reflects sustained efforts and dedication across all areas of the institution to address gender equality issues and demonstrates our ongoing commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion here at Southampton.”

Advance HE’s Athena SWAN Charter was originally established in 2005 to recognise commitment to advancing the careers of women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

In 2015, it was expanded to also recognise work undertaken in arts, humanities, social sciences, business and law (AHSSBL), with an emphasis on gender equality more broadly, not only barriers to progression that affect women.

Our University is a founding signatory of the Athena SWAN Charter and was given a silver award in 2016 after ten years at bronze. Several academic units and faculties have also successfully submitted for departmental awards, recognising their commitment to implement policies and widen awareness.
