Top tips for travelling safely during the winter nights

As the festive season is upon us, it can be a busy time for our students and staff and you may find yourself out and about in the evening. Whether you’re home for Christmas or around campus, we’ve put together some helpful advice to keep in mind when travelling late.

  • Try to walk with a friend or companion instead of walking alone and arrange travel to and from your destination before you go out.
  • Keep to well-lit and well used areas. Don’t take short cuts through parks or anywhere that looks dark or deserted.
  • Walk briskly and with confidence, be alert to your surroundings.
  • Let your housemates, friends or family know your travel plans, including the approximate time they should expect you home.
  • If you’ve booked an Uber, make sure the driver, vehicle and registration is the same as what’s showing on the app. Find out how to stay safe while riding with Uber here.
  • If you’re in Southampton, don’t forget that Unilink provide regular bus services between campuses and halls. Find out more about the Unilink services running over the Christmas period. Radio Taxis has a mobile phone app, which allows you to request a taxi and pay with credit or debit card, for times when you don’t have any cash.
