A number of academics from our University feature amongst researchers with the world’s most highly cited papers.
The list of Highly Cited Researchers, published by Clarivate Analytics, recognises world-class researchers for their research performance as demonstrated by the production of multiple highly cited papers that rank in the top 1 per cent by citations for their field and over the past decade (2006 to 2016), based on the Web of Science.
Congratulations to the following Southampton academics to feature:

These researchers have distinguished themselves by publishing a high number of papers that rank in the top 1 per cent most cited works in their field and during its year of publication. Such consistent production of highly cited reports indicates that the work of these researchers has been repeatedly judged by their peers to be of notable significance and utility.
The UK’s four higher education funding bodies recently awarded Clarivate Analytics’ Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) a contract to provide Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 assessment panels with citation information.
This information includes data about the number of times a scholarly publication has been cited in other scholarly publications – called citation counts. Eleven of REF 2021’s 34 expert panels have said they plan to use citation data to inform the peer review process during the assessment phase of REF 2021.
