For national Anti-Bullying Week in November 2018 the #UoSrespect campaign group, supported by Harassment Contacts and HR colleagues, delivered a roadshow event across our campuses.
Staff and students were asked to define what respect means to them, and over 400 of you provided responses. Thank you to everyone who took part – you’ve helped to create an open and thoughtful dialogue around respect that will inform the future actions of the Respect campaign.
Following the event, a report on the week’s activities was submitted to the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee.
From Highfield to Avenue Campus, Boldrewood to 1 Guildhall Square, Southampton General Hospital, the National Oceanography Centre Southampton and the University of Southampton Science Park, here are just a few of the themes from your responses:
- Accepting others for who they are
- Listening to others, respecting their views and valuing individual differences (cultural, religious, perspectives etc.)
- Maintaining integrity and providing transparency in decision making
- Being treated, and treating others, fairly
- Avoiding being judgmental, choosing not to gossip and maintaining confidentiality
- Trusting others and being trusted yourself – not engaging in micromanagement
- Giving your time and attention to others, as well as showing appreciation
- Treating others as you would like to be treated.
Jeremy Gautrey, Head of Employee Relations and #UoSrespect campaign lead, commented:
“It was really inspirational to see so many of our staff and students taking part in the roadshow event.
“People spoke very openly and honestly about what respect means to them, and a number of common themes quickly surfaced. These themes will be taken forward by the community campaign group in helping to shape the next steps of the campaign.”
