Stay ahead of scammers: popular phishing technique targeting universities

Students and staff should familiarise themselves with an email scam that is currently being used to target universities.

If you receive an email claiming that your library account/card has expired and that you need to reactivate your account, delete the email – do not click on any links or attachments.

Scammers are becoming increasingly skilled at sending these messages from email accounts which appear to be part of a university’s network, and the link they provide is also likely to look genuine.

The University of Southampton will never email to prompt you to reactivate your ID/library card online. If you have queries relating to the Library, you can email: [email protected] or talk to a member of staff at your local library site.

For more information on protecting yourself against scams, search the iSolutions website for ‘phishing’. If you’re ever suspicious of an email, please contact ServiceLine – you can also report emails within Outlook using the ‘Report Message’ icon to the right of the top toolbar (screenshot below).
