Volunteers needed for new clinical trial into genetically modified oils

Volunteers are needed for a new supplementation study to test a vegetable oil that has been modified, using GM technology, to contain fatty acids present in fish oil that are beneficial to health.

The trial is led by Graham Burdge, who is a professor of Nutritional Biochemistry within the Human Development and Health (HDH), Faculty of Medicine.

The aim of the study, funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), is to test whether the modified oil can replace oily fish as a source of omega-3 fatty acids in the diet. This study follows on from a highly successful fat absorption study conducted last year using the same dietary oils.

To be eligible to participate, volunteers need to be:

  • Men and women aged 18 to 30 years or 50 to 75 years
  • In general good health
  • Willing to give blood samples
  • Willing to attend a clinic at Southampton General Hospital five times (for one hour) over six months
  • Willing to help with a nutrition research study.

Volunteers will receive a donation for their participation and reasonable travel expenses will be covered.

If you would like to know more about the research or might be interested in helping with this study, please contact Dr Annette West on: [email protected] or tel: 023 8120 5252.
