Today is the Lunar New Year. There are several events and activities taking place in Southampton throughout February. Below we’ve listed a few events you might like to attend.
All staff, students and members of the community are invited to join the Confucius Institute in celebrating the Lunar New Year (otherwise known as Chinese New Year), welcoming the year of the Earth Pig.

The Institute is working in collaboration with the Chinese Association of Southampton (CAS) to put on the display, which will include:
- Lion and dragon dance
- Kung Fu display
- Traditional Chinese dance
- Music and song
- Chinese Opera
- Chinese cultural workshops

The Students’ Union will be hosting a range of events to celebrate the Lunar New Year, including:
- Decorating the concourse of the SUSU building (Building 42) for the first week of February
- Chinese food giveaway 5 February 11:30 – 13:30 SUSU building concourse
- Free film screening of Kung Fu Hustle in the Union cinema (Mandarin with English subtitles) on 3 February at 17:00. There’s no need to book in advance, just bring along your valid ID. Entry will be on a first come, first serve basis as there are approximately 220 seats available.
The Chinese Association of Southampton will also be holding two further events this February:
- Friday 15 February – Chinese National Dress (Qipao) Show and Contest at Solent University (Spark Building) from 17:00 – 22:00.
- Sunday 17 February – Lantern Parade 15:00 – 17:30 starting from the John Hansard Gallery (JHG) at Guildhall Square, and continuing through the Bargate and the surrounding area. There will be the opportunity to build your own Chinese lantern at the (JHG) The parade will be headed by a Chinese ‘dragon’ and followed by a Chinese ‘lion’.

Join the Shaolin Temple for a celebration on Saturday 2 February in Guildhall Square from 11:30 – 15:30. The event will include singing, dancing, Kung Fu performances, traditional activities and workshops, as well as a whole host of food and drink stalls.
