University supporting Orwell Youth Prize entrants

The University Outreach team is working with a group of talented writers from local schools to develop entries to the Orwell Youth Prize 2019.

The project draws together outreach and academic staff at the University, offering workshops on topics such as writing techniques, experiences of social class and the lessons authors can draw from holocaust literature.

The inaugural ‘Writing Wrongs’ programme works with students from non-traditional university backgrounds to develop essays, poetry, fiction and investigative reporting on social justice issues.

Most recently, the cohort attended a two-night residential at Cumberland Lodge where they worked with journalist Rebecca Omonira-Oyekanmi and Cumberland Lodge Scholar Alex Blower to develop their pieces. Find out more by reading this blog post.

The final Writing Wrongs workshop takes place on Highfield Campus on Saturday 16 March, ahead of submissions to the Orwell Youth Prize in May 2019.

Follow @UoS_Schools on Twitter to find out more, and to see the finished pieces. Staff can also contact: Muniza Siddiqui (Widening Participation Team Leader Post-16) if they would like to get involved with the project.
