Launched in September 2016, the Enabling Services Inclusive Learning Volunteers (ILV) project draws upon the support of students (in second year or above) to assist other students, who may have a disability, specific learning difficulty or mental health condition, to overcome barriers and thrive at university. Enabling Services provides training and guidance for the ILVs and the project has been extremely successful, providing invaluable peer-support.
ILVs is the umbrella term used for the role of either a Transition Facilitator or Peer Mentor.
Transition Facilitators (TF):
TFs can help students in navigating the campus, support engagement with clubs/societies, offer study advice, and support with maintaining positive wellbeing alongside their studies.
Peer Mentors (PM):
PMs can help students with prioritising work, time management, support managing work/life balance and addressing sleep issues. PMs can meet with students for 3 – 7 sessions, including an initial meeting and a next steps meeting.
If you believe a student may benefit from accessing support from an ILV, please encourage them to come along to an Enabling Services Student Support Drop-in session so that we can ensure that this type of support is appropriate for them. Our Drop-in sessions provide an opportunity to meet 1:1 with a trained advisor who can assist students in accessing the range of support available.
