Today is No Smoking Day

Giving up smoking is one of the most beneficial things that you can do for your health. However, it is often difficult to know the best way to go about it. Relying on willpower alone is the least effective way to stop. Luckily there are many resources to help you.

If you live within the Southampton area then you can contact Southampton Healthy Living, an organisation funded by the NHS, which looks at your lifestyle habits and offers ongoing support with giving up smoking.

If you live in Hampshire but outside Southampton and Portsmouth then Quit4life offers a free NHS service to assist you in giving up.

For information on what stop smoking support is available outside of Hampshire, please ring the national helpline on +44(0)30 0123 1044 or visit the NHS Smokefree website

After just 12 hours without a cigarette, the body cleanses itself of the excess carbon monoxide from the cigarettes. The carbon monoxide level returns to normal, increasing the body’s oxygen levels. Just one day after quitting smoking, the risk of heart attack begins to decrease.

Quitting smoking at any point will improve your health even if you have smoked for a number of years.
