Applications open for British Science Association Media Fellowships 2019

The British Science Association’s (BSA) Media Fellowships provide a unique opportunity for practising scientists, clinicians and engineers to spend two to six weeks working at the heart of a media outlet such as The Guardian, BBC Breakfast or Sky News during summer 2019.

Applications for our institution close on Friday 12 April 2019 and can be submitted via an online form.

The Fellowship aims to give scientists the confidence to engage with the media, bridge the gap between journalists and scientists, and tackle mistrust. You can read more about the scheme on the British Science Association website, or watch a short film on their YouTube channel. You might also find it useful to read about others’ experience on placement, for example, by reading this blog, or this interview with our previous Media Fellows.

Dr Lucy Green was our Media Fellow in 2018. When asked what was the most important lesson she learned from the experience, she commented:

“This was a great summer!  The Media Fellowship scheme is fabulous … thanks!

“I’ve seen how journalists are swamped with information and pressed for time. They just may not notice some of the important science that is taking place. It made me really appreciate the need to present the science as a good story with lots of media associated with it, either in press releases or through other channels.”

Who is eligible?

Before applying you should check the terms and conditions associated with the scheme, as well as the key dates you’ll need to be available. You can download all the documents on the British Science Association website.

Ready to apply?

This year applications are being collected via an online form. The form will ask you a few questions about your role, your interest in the media, and what you hope to gain from the scheme. You can request a copy of the application questions in a Word Document if you would like to prepare answers before submitting.
