New life for Wide Lane sports ground thanks to native tree initiative

This year, our Sport and Wellbeing department pledged that all new memberships would contribute towards the purchase and planting of more native trees for the University’s grounds.

As a result, 10 new oak trees have now been planted at Wide Lane, which will help to improve biodiversity and enhance the natural environment around our sports grounds.

Isabella Camilleri (SUSU VP Welfare), Lucy Stephenson (SUSU Ethical and Environmental Officer) and Molly Simmons (Estates and Facilities placement student) helped with the planting at the end of March.

Isabella said:

“I am really happy to see departments at the University making sustainable pledges like this. Thank you to Sport and Wellbeing and the University Sustainability team for inviting us to come along and help plant the trees, and for fulfilling your pledge.”

Continually creating and improving habitats for the benefit of wildlife is an important part of both our Environmental Management System (known as ISO 14001:2015) and our Biodiversity Plan.
