Colleagues may be aware of reports this week in Times Higher Education, The Times and other media outlets reporting a reduction in enrolments at the University of Southampton since 2015. The figures reported come from a 2018 UCAS release of data related to applicants and acceptances for universities and colleges.
The University has now responded to The Times article, entitled: Elite universities hit by fall in student numbers, pointing out their article’s misleading emphasis on quantity over quality.
Our response goes on to say:
“After a spike in student numbers in 2015, the University of Southampton’s more recent strategy has been one of higher entry tariffs and increasing the quality of the student experience. A reduction in student numbers to pre-2015 levels is both strategic, and deliberate, even though applications are increasing. Far from ‘losing its way’, last year Southampton rose in every major UK and international university league table.”
