As we’re well into Semester 2, it can be a busy time for our students and staff and you may find yourself out and about in the evening. Whether you’re around the city or campus, we’ve put together some helpful advice to keep in mind when travelling late.
Plan how you’re travelling
Let your housemates, friends or family know your travel plans, including the approximate time they should expect you home. You can find some information about how you can get around below:
- Bus: Unilink provide regular bus services between campuses and halls up to 00:30.
- SUSU Safety Bus: The Students’ Union Safety Bus is now running between 22:00 to 02:00 during the exams season and leaves outside Building 42, Highfield Campus.
- Taxis: Radio Taxis have a handy mobile app where you can pay by card should you find yourself with no cash.
- Uber: Make sure the driver, vehicle and registration is the same as what’s showing on the app. Find out how to stay safe while riding with Uber here.
Avoid walking alone and stick to well-lit and well-used areas
Try to walk with a friend or companion instead of walking alone. Don’t take short cuts through parks or anywhere that looks dark or deserted. Walk briskly and with confidence and be alert to your surroundings.
Cycle safe
If you cycle around the city or our campuses at night, make sure to wear a helmet and high-visibility clothing and ensure that your bike lights are turned on.
Keep your phone charged
If you’re on campus late, make sure your phone stays charged as it’s easy for phone batteries to run low without you realising. Keep in mind that the Hartley Library on Highfield Campus is currently open 24 hours and has charging points available in the quiet study areas.
