Gabriela Sitinova, doctoral researcher from the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, has won the top award at this year’s Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) University Grand Final organised by the Doctoral College.
Gabriela competed against doctoral researchers from our University’s five other faculties. Gabriela will now go on to represent our University at the 3MT® national semi-finals later this year.

This annual competition, developed by the University of Queensland and now an international initiative, requires doctoral researchers to explain their research project to a non-specialist audience in just three minutes, accompanied by just one static slide.
Commenting on her win, Gabriela Sitinova said:
“The Three Minute Thesis competition is a great opportunity for doctoral researchers to present their work to a non-specialist audience. I am very thankful that I was able to contribute with my project and awarded the top prize. It was very inspiring to hear other contestants present their interesting projects in the faculty heat as well as in the Grand Final. I hope this will motivate other doctoral researchers to participate in the competition next year.
“I would also like to thank the Doctoral College for the organisation of the event and making it very enjoyable.”
Well done to all of our Three Minute Thesis contestants.
Winning the Runner Up prize from the Judging Panel was Alvaro Castilla Beltran from the Faculty of Environmental and Life Sciences, with Jennifer Walker, and Gabriela Sitinova both from the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences taking the People’s Choice award in a tied vote.
While the judges deliberated, the audience were treated to a show-stopping performance from the Head of Curiosity at Winchester Science Centre, Dr Ben Littlefield, who gave a talk on ‘How to make friends, win funding and maybe save the world,’ featuring a few flames!
The 3MT® prize money will be used by this year’s winners to support their research.
Congratulations to all who took part and we wish Gabriela the best of luck in the next stage of the competition!
The 3MT® Grand Final was held last week as part of the Festival of Doctoral Research, with events running until 23 May. Find out more
