Sowing the seeds for a greener future at our sports campuses

Hot on the heels of last month’s oak tree planting, Sport and Wellbeing colleagues are preparing to sow native wildflower seeds at our Wide Lane Sports Grounds and Watersports Centre to help encourage biodiversity.

The seeds have been bought thanks to funding from Kew Gardens, which also included a 360-degree time-lapse camera to document flower growth and visits from insects.

As you enter Wide Lane, you will see the new oak trees on your left and 400m of new native hedgerow on your right. This was planted four years ago and is developing into a new habitat for birds and insects.

The Sport and Wellbeing team is keen for more people to access these green spaces and make use of the facilities. A new ‘Just Run’ map highlights four jogging routes around Wide Lane, and outdoor gym stations will be incorporated soon.

Any student or member of staff can visit the sites – just remember to take your ID card with you. Wide Lane is a very short walk from Southampton Airport Parkway station on the U1A bus route. The Watersports campus is a five minute walk from Connaught Halls.
