Updated guidance for staff: supporting students with Specific Learning Difficulties

Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLDs) is a general term that includes a number of conditions including Dyslexia, Dyspraxia and ADHD.

The largest percentage of students in Higher Education who have been identified with a disability fall under the umbrella term SpLD.

Whilst each student will require individual support dependant on their unique situation, there is some generic support and guidance available to staff that may be beneficial to all students.

Enabling Services has developed some useful guidance which outlines the reasonable adjustments process and some of the recommend strategies which can support the academic achievement of students with these conditions.

In order to make Enabling Services‘ support website easier for colleagues to navigate, the information for staff section of the website has been split into two main areas as below:

  • Information about exams – Here staff can find guidelines for the assessment and marking of written examinations by students with Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLDs), information about Additional Exam Recommendations (AERs) for students with SpLDs, and our exams policy for disabled and dyslexic students.
  • Supporting students with an SpLD – This page contains links to each of the new SpLD pages, which outline the reasonable adjustments process and some of the recommended strategies which can support the academic achievement of students with these conditions.

If you have a question or would like to find out more about reasonable adjustments for students with SpLDs, please contact Enabling Services on 02380 597 726 or via email: [email protected]
