The QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) World University Rankings feature 1,001 institutions in its published list and is based on performance indicators focused on excellence in research as well as global reputation amongst fellow academics and employers.

Southampton scores particularly well for International Students and International Faculty as a measure of how internationally attractive the University is to students and staff from outside of the UK. The score for Citations per Faculty has also strengthened as a measure of the impact and quality of Southampton’s research outputs.

“I am delighted that the University of Southampton’s continued ranking amongst the world’s top 100 universities recognises the extent of our international standing,” said Professor Mark Spearing, President and Vice-Chancellor (Interim).

“This achievement reflects internationalisation as a key strategic priority for us and we will continue to extend our research, education and enterprise activities worldwide to strengthen further our future global position.”

Earlier this year, the University placed five subjects amongst the top 50 in the world in the latest QS World Rankings by Subject, led by Nursing at 5th overall, Mining Engineering at 30th, Earth & Marine Sciences at 46th, Statistics & Operational Research at 48th and Archaeology at joint 48th.

Over 1.5 million academics and 240,000 employers around the world contributed their views to QS this year, with over 13 million research papers and 93 million citations also reviewed and analysed to measure the impact of the research produced by the universities ranked.
