How staff can support in welcoming our Pre-sessional students

This week, we look forward to welcoming a number of new Pre-sessional students to our community. Pre-sessional students are international students who are joining us to improve their English before starting their degrees in September.

We’ve put together some helpful information below that you may find handy as a staff member. A big thank you to our staff for all their support and for playing such important roles in welcoming, supporting and teaching our Pre-sessional students.

Helping students find their way around

With our sprawling campuses, it can be tricky for new students (and staff!) to find their way around. If you spot any students looking lost, you can help them find their way using the large printed maps that are located across our campuses, directing them to a nearby Reception (such as the Student Services Centre if on Highfield), or advising them to use our campus maps here. Google Maps can also be a helpful tool if you have a smart phone.

Being that friendly face

It can be daunting arriving in a new country for the first time and it can help to see a friendly face. You can be recognisable as a staff member by simply wearing your staff ID with your UoS lanyard while out and about.

Staying informed

The University and Students’ Union (SUSU) plan a number of activities to create a great welcome experience for our Pre-sessional students. Find out what advice we give to students to help them settle in, as well as information about the events run by the Students’ Union.

Messages are shared with Pre-sessional students across a range of channels including: email, SUSSED News, SUSU’s WeChat (QR code below), and the Student Communications Facebook Page. If you would like to see what messages are going to our students, feel free to follow those channels for more information.

If you have any questions, please contact the Pre-sessional Team via email at: [email protected]
