International students: please be aware of a recent telephone scam

We’ve been made aware of a telephone scam targeting international students.

The scam involves students being contacted by someone claiming to represent the Embassy from their home country. The scammer(s) may inform the student that they owe additional money and the call will seem very convincing. Please be aware, this is NOT a genuine call.

The scammer may give the student a website to visit or an app to download, requesting that they pay them money (sometimes many thousands of pounds) online.

If students receive a call like this, they should not visit the website or pay any money through online transfer. Instead, they should end the call and block the number.

If you have any concerns or have been targeted, please visit the Student Services Centre, based in Building 37 on Highfield Campus to speak to the team who will advise you.

Students who are targeted should contact Action Fraud by telephone on Tel: +44 (0) 30 0123 2040.
