Good progress on Groupsite Transfer to Sharepoint Online

If you’re the owner of a UoS Groupsite, the June 2019 briefing sheet from the Office 365 team explained why all of the sites created in SharePoint 2010 needed to be moved to SharePoint Online, or suspended if not required. SharePoint 2010 will not be available from January 2020.

Benefits of SharePoint Online include:

  1. Improved user interface (both browser and mobile access)
  2. Integration with other tools and applications
  3. Increased security and accessibility

Some great progress has been made so far. Mal Allerton, Executive Director, iSolutions said:

“We would like to thank you all for taking the initiative and starting to migrate and suspend your old Groupsites. A reduction of 600 since the beginning of the year is fantastic but we still have some way to go and wanted to share progress with you.”

How is your area doing?

These charts show the progress in each Faculty and service.

Whilst the figures in some areas seem quite large, the complexity of the task to transfer sites varies depending on the content in the current Sharepoint 2010 site, and how much it needs to be reviewed before it is transferred.

Sarah Harding, Executive Assistant to Associate Dean Education and Student Experience (Faculty of Social Sciences) said:

“Migrating to the new SharePoint Online is so quick and easy! I own a lot of sites and it only took me a couple of minutes to set up each of the new sites and transfer my documents across, which is a really simple drag and drop exercise. Once I had done this, the new features allowed me to make user-friendly and more visually impressive sites.”

Groupsite owners need to do one of the following:

  1. For Groupsites that are no longer required, these should be suspended – Suspend a Groupsite
  2. For Groupsites which are still required, migrate the content and suspend your old site – Migrating your files to SharePoint Online
  3. If you want iSolutions to suspend a site for you, please fill in this form – ServiceNow Suspension Request

For further information please book to attend the ‘Migrating from Groupsite to SharePoint Online’ and ‘Introduction to Office 365 and SharePoint Online’ seminars, email the project team or visit the Office 365 Centre.
