On Saturday 17 August, Enabling Services will be hosting the first of four Transition Days for students enrolling for the 2019-20 academic year.
Transition Days provide students who have disclosed a disability to find out more about the wide range of specialist support available. They also have the chance to discuss their personal needs and take a tour of Highfield Campus.
These annual events are particularly important, as they provide an early opportunity to identify any additional support that a student might require before they begin studying with us. As a result, students begin their studies with tailored support already in place and can make the best possible start to their studies.
Each year, almost 200 students with a range of disabilities (including mental health conditions and specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia), benefit from these events. Our Transition Days were even featured as part of the Guardian’s How to tell which universities are taking student mental health seriously guide.
This year, the format of the day has been updated to incorporate a visit to our Clarkson Rest and Study Room and the Assistive Technology Suite in the Hartley Library, which have both been recently refurbished to include the latest facilities and technologies as part of our commitment to student support.
For many students who feel anxious about university life and how they’ll manage the changes alongside their disability, Transition Days can be a real lifeline. They provide great opportunities to meet other students and to get to know the campus in a calm environment.
