We’re ranked 122 in the latest Times Higher Education’s (THE) World University Rankings for 2020. Amongst UK universities in the rankings, Southampton is placed 15, and within Europe, the University is 47.The ranking reflects our performance in five categories including teaching and research (where we showed modest improvements this year) which, together with citations, all carry extra weighting. The remaining categories are international outlook and industry income where there is much lower weighting.
This year, over 1,000 universities are ranked by the THE, with fewer UK institutions reaching the top 200 – a drop from 34 to 28 since 2016. By contrast, the number of German institutions has risen, from three to 23, with Iranian universities amongst the biggest climbers this year. Chinese and Japanese universities also continue to catch up with US and UK institutions in the rankings.
