Brexit and research – a video message from Mark Spearing

Many colleagues and students in our community may be concerned about the possible implications of the United Kingdom (UK) leaving the European Union (EU).

University preparations

The University’s Brexit Task Force is meeting regularly and will continue to publish communications and share information as the situation evolves.

Our priority continues to be providing support to all of our people; staff and students, and protecting the Southampton community from uncertainty and anxiety.

Research

Retaining close connectivity with our European neighbours remains essential to our future education and research relationships. Earlier this week, Professor Mark Spearing, Vice-President for Research and Enterprise, recorded a short video message for colleagues and students interested in the impact of Brexit on our research activity.

Mark said:

“The UK government has been very clear on its preferred position of a form of associate membership and therefore access to European Union funding programmes and has put policies in place to underwrite existing grants and even, in all likelihood, to underwrite grants which are currently under evaluation and are awarded after a Brexit date.

“Together with colleagues in the Russell Group and Universities UK, we’ve been lobbying very hard to maintain that government position. The interactions I’ve had with minsters of UK government and senior civil servants reassures me that the importance of either associate membership or replacement of the funding by other means is well-understood and will be adhered to, even if we have a harder version of Brexit.”

There continues to be a strong recommendation that EU citizens currently residing in the UK should apply for ‘Settled or Pre-Settled Status’ before the deadline.
