Celebrating the Mexican Day of the Dead in Southampton

The Centre for Mexico-Southampton Collaboration (MeXsu) in Modern Languages and Linguistics and the Mexican Society (MexSoc) have organised a series events to mark this year’s Mexican Day of the Dead. The activities will also focus on Women in Mexico.

The Day of the Dead, or Dia de Muertos, is a Mexican holiday when people gather to remember friends and family who have died.

In the days leading up to the actual Day of the Dead (Friday 1 November) there will be altars (ofrendas) in the Students’ Union and on Avenue Campus. Children from local schools have been invited to visit the altars to learn more about them through talks and quizzes.

Highlighting the theme of women in Mexico, and as part of the Life Long Learning study series, there will be a screening of the award-winning film Frida on Friday 1 November between 18:00 and 21:00.

The film is a forerunner to a Life Long Learning Study Day on Saturday 2 November entitled ‘The Myths, Controversies and Complexities of a global Icon Artist’ where you can learn more about Mexican painter, Frida Kahlo. These events take place at Avenue Campus, you can find more details here.

MexSoc will be organising their fabulous Day of the Dead party in The Cube on the evening of Saturday 2 November starting at 21:00. A free tequila shot on entrance, tequila raffle, Catrina face painting will all be part of the night. (Tickets are £4 on the door). Find out more here.

The culmination will be on Sunday 3 November at The Brook (Portswood Road), where they are hosting a traditional Day of the Dead festival, with activities run by the local Mexican community, for all ages. You can book here.
