Since the publication of yesterday’s update about the outcomes of the recent trade union ballots, the University has received a formal notice of intent to take action from the University and College Union (UCU). This confirms they have asked their members at 60 UK universities to support strike action over the national issues of pay and/or pension* reform. The planned dates for action will start on Monday 25 November 2019.
The University respects the right of trade union members to take industrial action and will provide clear policies to help colleagues understand how this will affect their pay and pensions.
Commitment to our students
Meeting our commitments to our students and providing every opportunity for them to achieve their potential is always our highest priority, including while we lead the University community through a period of industrial action.
We will work with SUSU and other colleagues throughout the University to put in place the arrangements necessary to ensure that our students are not disadvantaged by any industrial action and continue to receive a world-class education at Southampton.
We know that all of our colleagues care deeply about the education of our students and the wider activities of our University, and we will work to mitigate the impact of any action on our community.
We will continue to post updates as new information becomes available.
Dates for action
Strike action will take place on 25, 26, 27, 28, 29 November 2019 and 2, 3, 4 December 2019.
Action short of a strike will consist of participating members ‘working to contract’, not covering for absent colleagues, not rescheduling lectures or classes cancelled due to strike action, and not undertaking any voluntary activities. It will take place from Monday 25 November 2019 to no later than 29 April 2020.
