Next week is National Anti-Bullying Week

Anti-Bullying Week takes place from 11 – 15 November 2019. This year’s Anti-Bullying Week theme is ‘Change Starts With Us’.

We know that a failure to behave with dignity, courtesy and respect towards others can harm individuals and seriously affect our work, study, personal and family life.  As such, harassment, bullying and victimisation are unacceptable forms of behaviour and will not be tolerated.

Last year, Harassment Contacts and HR colleagues engaged with over 400 staff and students to define what respect means to us.  Themes included:

  • Accepting others for who they are
  • Listening to others, respecting their views and valuing individual differences (cultural, religious, perspectives etc.)
  • Maintaining integrity and providing transparency in decision making
  • Being treated, and treating others, fairly
  • Avoiding being judgmental, choosing not to gossip and maintaining confidentiality
  • Trusting others and being trusted yourself – not engaging in micromanagement
  • Giving your time and attention to others, as well as showing appreciation
  • Treating others as you would like to be treated

These have helped the dialogue around respect that is informing the current and future actions of the #UoSrespect campaign and Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) Committee.

Working with the Trade Unions and the Students’ Union, our University is committed to supporting, developing and promoting equality and diversity in all its practices and activities, and provides guidance on the steps to address bullying.

In light of this year’s ‘Change Starts with Us’ theme, our staff and students are invited to think about a small change they will make, to be a part of the solution to bullying. Tweet your response using #AntiBullyingWeek #ChangeStartsWithUs #UoSrespect #ExpectRespect
