As part of Anti-Bullying Week and the #UoSrespect Campaign, we wanted to remind staff and students of the support available to anyone who has been affected by bullying.
Our Dignity at Work and Study Policy sets out standards we expect from all staff and students. Anyone who has witnessed or experienced bullying should speak to their line manager, next level line manager, tutor or a Harassment Contact. Harassment Contacts are trained volunteer staff members available to support those who’ve been subjected to bullying, or who’ve been accused of bullying.
Staff and students have also come together to form networks and societies to represent, support and engage members who share a similar background, characteristic or common cause and can also offer support.
For students:
- The Student Life team – primarily based in halls of residence but available to all students, regardless of their year or study or where they live, this team supports student wellbeing and enhances the student experience.
- First Support – there to support students facing significant difficulties in their life, or dealing with a crisis.
- Enabling Services – there to support students with disabilities, mental health problems or specific learning disabilities.
- The Students’ Union Advice Centre – provides all students with free, independent and confidential support.
- The University Counselling Service – if you’re interested in counselling, contact Enabling Services or attend a Student Support Drop-In session.
If you’ve witnessed or experienced bullying, please speak to a Harassment Contact or attend a Student Support Drop-In session for an opportunity to meet one-to-one with a trained colleague.
For staff:
- Human Resources (HR) – available to advise line managers and employees on bullying issues. HR can help to assess the options available which may include the University’s disciplinary or grievance processes.
- The Health and Wellbeing team – has a range of resources to help staff look after their mental health and wellbeing.
- The Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) – offers a free, confidential advice service to staff, plus the option of counselling sessions at an additional charge.
- The Trade Unions (UCU, UNISON and Unite) – can also offer support.
- The Occupational Health service – available to staff to support the provision of a safe working environment. To access this service, staff should speak with their line manager.
- The Mediation Service – an independent, autonomous and confidential service available to our staff to help resolve conflict
