Professor Bashir Al-Hashimi to leave Southampton

Professor Bashir Al-Hashimi CBE, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences (FEPS), will be leaving the University at the end of March 2020 after 20 years here at Southampton. He will be taking up the role of Dean of the Faculty of Natural and Mathematical Sciences at King’s College London.

Professor Al-Hashimi said: “Southampton has been at the heart of my professional life for two decades and I will be extremely sad to leave. However, for family reasons I now need to be based predominantly in London going forwards and this exciting new opportunity will allow me to do so. I will always be grateful for the friendship and support I have received from so many colleagues and students here over the years.”

Professor Mark E. Smith, President and Vice-Chancellor, added: “Bashir has made a long and tremendous contribution to Southampton, not just in relation to his Faculty but right across the University. We are very sorry he will be leaving, and even in the short time I have worked alongside him I have really enjoyed it. However, I fully understand the personal reasons that have led to his decision. He has done a fantastic job as a Dean and more recently in creating the new Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences.

“We will shortly be starting a recruitment process for a successor as Dean, open to all suitable candidates internally and externally, to further grow and develop the Faculty as a world-leading powerhouse of teaching, research and enterprise excellence, building on the strong foundations made over the last 15 months.”
