Cycle to Work Scheme voucher limit increased to £2,500

The Cycle to Work Scheme could now help many more University commuters turn to greener journeys using cycles and equipment including electric bikes worth up to £2,500.

The increased voucher limit will enable staff to get:

  • More expensive electric bikes, enabling longer commute distances
  • Premium folding bikes, which are easier to store/take on trains
  • Adaptive bikes, promoting inclusive cycling

Cycle storage and security

It’s important to keep your bike safe. University staff can use cycle stores on campus, accessed using your University ID card. The cost is usually £5 for the year, but as an introductory offer to Cycle to Work scheme participants, Transport & Sustainability are offering free access for the first year after obtaining a bike through the scheme. Full details will be provided after applying for a voucher through the scheme.

Even when using the cycle stores, we advise using a D-lock for security and, if possible, a secondary lock or chain to secure removable items. D-locks can be purchased at a discounted rate from the Unilink office above the Students’ Union shop. For further advice on bicycle theft prevention, please download the ‘Security tips for cyclists’ leaflet.

Insure and register your bike (Cycleguard and BikeRegister)

The University strongly recommends that bikes and safety equipment are insured.  You can save 15 per cent on bike insurance through Cyclescheme’s partnership with Cycleguard.

Free Enrolment with BikeRegister: our security team will apply BikeRegister QR Code labels and register your bike, this will act as a visual deterrent to potential thieves and increase the chance of being reunited with your bike in the event of it being stolen.  Please visit them at the Security Office in Building 32.

Join the Love to Ride network

Love to Ride is a fun, free programme with fantastic prizes available for riding your bike and encouraging others to do so too. You can find out more and register quickly and easily on the Southampton section of the Love to Ride website – remember to select University of Southampton (Staff) as your organisation so your rides count towards our statistics. Through the platform, colleagues can set goals, record rides, earn badges and unlock competitions and discounts.

You can find out about Cycle to Work scheme eligibility and savings on the HR website, and if you have any questions please contact Geraldine Witt.
