An action plan and self-assessment which commits our University to supporting all our technical staff has been submitted to the Science Council today, Wednesday 4 December.

The plan, which was approved by the UEB last week, is part of the Science Council’s Technician Commitment which the University signed up to in 2018.

The Technician Commitment aims to improve the visibility, recognition and career development of technical staff within the University and to ensure the sustainability of the immense contribution that they make to all aspects of University life.

The University established its Technician Commitment Steering Group (TCSG), chaired by Professor Bashir Al-Hashimi, Dean of Engineering and Physical Sciences, in October 2018. The TCSG comprises technical and academic representatives from each faculty, as well as representatives from professional services including Estates and Facilities, iSolutions, Human Resources and Communications.

Over the past year, the TCSG has developed a self-assessment of the University’s standing in terms of visibility, recognition, career development and sustainability and also a two-year action plan to improve upon its current position. A draft self-assessment and action plan has been circulated to all technical staff within the University and their feedback has helped refine the plan.

Signing the documents in preparation for submission to the Science Council, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mark E. Smith said:

“There are over 400 technical staff at our University working in both professional services and faculties. They play a hugely important role in the success of our University, enhancing our reputation for delivering excellence, contributing towards the Education, Research and Enterprise agendas and also working closely with students to ensure they have a positive experience. This action plan will ensure they get the visibility, recognition and career development they deserve.”

The Self-Assessment and Action Plan are both available here.
