University of Southampton Malaysia relocation and expansion plans

On Wednesday 27 November 2019 the University Council ratified expansion plans for the University of Southampton Malaysia (UoSM) to move to a larger, high-quality campus and to expand the portfolio of programmes offered at UoSM.

“I was delighted to visit the team in Malaysia within my first 100 days in office. To see first-hand the enthusiasm the students and staff have was an inspiration.

“We have some excellent plans for the future of our activities in Malaysia, which I was very happy to give my personal support to. I’m pleased for the dedicated team of colleagues in Malaysia and all those who work closely with them in the UK – together, we have an exciting period ahead.” said Professor Mark E. Smith, Vice Chancellor.

The relocation to EcoWorld in the vibrant and growing Iskandar region of Malaysia will provide a high-quality estate that will support the outstanding education and student experience currently offered by the University. The introduction of new programmes, with flexible delivery models, will be attractive to a wider group of prospective students which will enable the University to further strengthen its networks across government, higher education institutions and the corporate sector. The expansion will be an important aspect of UoS and UoSM supporting the growth of the region, country and wider ASEAN region.

Speaking about the expansion Professor Rebecca Taylor said “We are delighted that the University of Southampton has given its backing to support the expansion of operations in Malaysia. It demonstrates a real confidence in the team in Malaysia and confirms the University’s commitment to international education, student experience, collaborative research, corporate engagement and partnerships.”

The University of Southampton Malaysia was launched in 2012 and now has 246 students studying on Southampton’s Engineering Foundation Year and three MEng programmes. The approval of the expansion plans confirms the University’s commitment to further developing the portfolio of high-quality education, research and enterprise.

Many University of Southampton Malaysia students already take advantage of the high-quality facilities at EcoWorld including the use of the accommodation at EcoNest and the wide range of cafes, sport, retail and entertainment outlets.

The University is confident that the new location for UoSM and the expansion of the institution’s portfolio will provide an environment that best supports student engagement and success.
