Tips to maintain your health and wellbeing

As you enter the start of a new term, we wanted to remind you of a few tips to maintain your health and wellbeing, as well as some practical guidance.

  1. Remember to register with a local doctor (‘GP’, General Practitioner)

The quickest and easiest way to register is online, which you can do here for the University Health Service and here for Highfield Health.

You can also find your local GP using your postcode on the NHS Find a GP website.

Not sure on how to register?

You’ll have to formally register with the surgery you have chosen by submitting a completed registration form. For the University Health Service or Highfield Health GP surgery you can download the form via the Health Service Website. If you have chosen a different surgery, you should submit a completed registration form you can find here.

Remember to bring along details of your medical history and any medications you are using, and photographic ID.

International students, please remember to bring along a letter from the University of Southampton as proof that you are a student, along with your passport and any loose immigration documents. You should ask to be added to the list of National Health Service (NHS) patients. This means you will not have to pay a fee to visit the doctor.

Further information about health services locally can be found on the Health and Safety SharePoint site.

  1. Eat Right

Sometimes this can seem daunting on a budget, but you can stock up on delicious fruit and vegetables at the Students Union weekly Farmers Market on the Redbrick every Monday.

  1. Exercise

Keeping your body healthy and in shape is important. It doesn’t have to be extreme either. Walk to your classes, or take a look at what Sport and Wellbeing have to offer.

  1. Wash Your Hands

It’s so easy for students to spread germs to one another and not washing your hands makes it even easier to do so! Regularly washing your hands is a simple way to prevent germs from spreading.

  1. Get Enough Sleep

You may have a lot of late nights throughout the semester, but getting enough sleep can really improve your overall health and wellness.

  1. Drink Lots of Water

Staying hydrated will give you more energy throughout the day, reinvigorates your body, stops you from overeating and aids in concentration. It also helps prevent those pesky headaches so fill up your water bottle daily.

  1. Relax

It’s all too easy to get stressed but being overly stressed can cause a variety of health issues. Make sure to give yourself plenty of breaks and maintain a healthy routine on a daily basis.

Why not give mindfulness a try, take a look at Mindful Friday sessions with Enabling Services.
